Do’s and Dont’s for General Microbiology Lab
Always:
- Disinfect your work area before starting lab and after finishing lab.
- Wash your hands after you are done.
- Clean all lenses of the microscope with lens paper.
- Put away your microscope with the smallest objective in place.
- Use a cover slip with a wet mount preparation.
- Discard contaminated materials in the proper receptacle under the hood.
- Exception: wet mount slides go in disinfectant.
- Let bunsen burners cool before putting them away.
- Discard broken glass that is not contaminated in the broken glass container at the front of the room.
- Report any injury and cover cuts with a bandage.
Never:
- Eat or drink (or put anything in your mouth) in lab.
- Get oil on any lens other than the oil immersion lens of the microscope.
- Use anything other than lens paper to clean the lenses.
- Discard contaminated objects, i.e. swabs, in the waste paper baskets.
- Discard broken glass in the waste paper baskets.
