Do’s and Dont’s for General Microbiology Lab

Always:

  1. Disinfect your work area before starting lab and after finishing lab.
  2. Wash your hands after you are done.
  3. Clean all lenses of the microscope with lens paper.
  4. Put away your microscope with the smallest objective in place.
  5. Use a cover slip with a wet mount preparation.
  6. Discard contaminated materials in the proper receptacle under the hood.
    • Exception:  wet mount slides go in disinfectant.
  7. Let bunsen burners cool before putting them away.
  8. Discard broken glass that is not contaminated in the broken glass container at the front of the room.
  9. Report any injury and cover cuts with a bandage.

Never:

  1. Eat or drink (or put anything in your mouth) in lab.
  2. Get oil on any lens other than the oil immersion lens of the microscope.
  3. Use anything other than lens paper to clean the lenses.
  4. Discard contaminated objects, i.e. swabs, in the waste paper baskets.
  5. Discard broken glass in the waste paper baskets.
